City Council

The Veneta City Council consists of a mayor and four councilors nominated and elected from the city at large, or, in the case of one or more vacancies in the council, the council members whose offices are not vacant. At each biennial general election, two council positions are voted on, each for a four-year term. The current Veneta mayor and councilors are:

The mayor and councilors can be reached by calling City Hall at (541) 935-2191. The Veneta City Council meets every second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, 88184 8th Street. Meetings are open to the public. The concurrence of a majority of the members of the council present at a council meeting shall be necessary to decide any question before the council. The City may exercise fully all of its powers possible under United States and Oregon Law. Except as otherwise prescribed in the City of Veneta Charter, and as the Oregon Constitution reserves municipal legislative power to the voters of the city, all powers of the city are vested in the Council. The duties of the Mayor include:

• Appointing member of committees established by council rules;
• Appointing other persons required by the council to be so appointed;
• Shall have no veto power and shall sign all ordinances passed by the council within 3 days after their passing;
• The Mayor presides over deliberations of the council, preserves order, enforces council rules and determines the order of business under the rules; and
• The Mayor is a voting member of the council.

The City Administrator is the administrative head of the City of Veneta government.

The duties of the City Administrator include:

1. Attend all council meetings unless excused by the council or mayor;
2. Keep the council advised of the affairs and needs of the city;
3. See that the provisions of all ordinances are administered to the satisfaction of the council;
4. See that all terms of franchises, leases, contracts, permits, and privileges granted by the city are fulfilled;
5. Appoint, discipline and remove appointive personnel, except appointees of the mayor or council;
6. Supervise and control the administrator’s appointees in their service to the city;
7. Organize and reorganize the departmental structure of city government, as directed by the council;
8. Prepare and transmit to the council an annual city budget;
9. Supervise city contracts;
10. Supervise operation of all city-owned public utilities and property; and
11. Perform other duties as the council prescribes consistent with the city charter.
